Storey House by Facit Homes: Modern Housing in an Exceptional Natural Setting

Sensitive Response to Context
Located in the exceptional natural setting on the outskirts of London, Storey House by Facit Homes demonstrates how modern design can harmonize with the natural environment. The 4520 square feet of living space was created not only as a modern family home but also as a demonstration of innovative construction methods that balance sustainability, precision, and design sensitivity.
Modern Construction Methods
Facit Homes, known for its advanced use of modern methods of construction (MMC), applied its Facit MicroFactory™ directly on site. This mobile assembly system produced and assembled the house frame from engineered wood with exceptional accuracy and efficiency.
This approach reduced waste, improved productivity, and created a highly efficient structural system that underpins the house's design.
Exterior Design
The material palette ensures natural integration of the house into its surroundings:
A Western red cedar cladding was chosen because it is naturally warm and ages beautifully, harmonizing with the landscape.
Powder-coated aluminum panels and deep window openings provide a modern contrast and refined detail.
Extensive first-floor glass panels flood the interior with natural light and create scenic views of the river.
At the upper level, sloped and recessed window openings serve as architectural frames that emphasize the surrounding environment.
Carefully architectural volumetric division visually separates the first and second floors, reducing the scale of the house and ensuring its light presence in the surroundings.
Interior and Living Spaces
Inside, the house emphasizes spaciousness and unity:
The large open first-floor living area is suitable for family life and guests, with a double-height ceiling above the dining area.
The main living spaces on the upper floor offer panoramic southern views, with a master bedroom leading to a private balcony.
A micro-hardened concrete floor on the first floor creates a seamless, durable, and modern surface.
A laser-cut steel staircase, softened by cedar handrails, becomes both an artistic centerpiece and a tactile element.
Cedar is repeated on the living room ceiling, adding warmth and texture, balancing with smooth finishes.
A Modern Home in Harmony with Nature
Storey House embodies Facit Homes' vision of integrating design innovation and ecological sensitivity. Combining modern construction technologies with carefully selected natural materials, the house offers its inhabitants a calm and expressive modern home that celebrates both contemporary living and the beauty of its natural surroundings.
