Spanish Exhibition Hall GOJE from Slate by Topway Space Design: Geometry, Light and Poetic Space
The Spanish exhibition hall GOJE from slate, designed by Topway Space Design, transforms the traditional material showcase into an immersive gallery of geometry, shadows and reflections. Completed in 2022 in Dongguan, China, the 1000 m² space redefines perception of natural slate — not as static product samples, but as vital elements forming poetic architecture.
Geometry as Concept: Diagonal Cuts and Diamonds
The design rejects orthogonal norms. Instead, it draws inspiration from the dynamics of diagonal lines — forms embodying both stability and instability, similar to Pisa Tower and Egyptian pyramids.
-
Lobby reinterprets slate through diamond geometry, evoking the image of precious stone facets.
-
Slanted walls and ceilings create a sense of motion and instability, balanced by carefully organized lighting.
-
The space feels like a three-dimensional collage of fragments and memories, more gallery than exhibition hall.
This geometric language makes every corner unexpected, offering new perspectives and reflections with each step.
Light as Element: Sacred Atrium
The building originally received light only from the western facade. Topway reworked it as follows:
-
Carving a three-story atrium in the northeast corner.
-
Introducing an inverted triangular light well with mirror roofs to refract sunlight twice.
-
Creating a dramatic sacred light effect, transforming beams into divine elements that animate the entire hall.
This choreography of light and shadow turns the space into an existential journey, from darkness and compression to revelation and liberation.
From Darkness to Reflections
Visitors move through spaces alternating between shadow and illumination. Sunlight becomes an architectural material, establishing a rhythm of time within the hall.
-
Diagonal wooden ceilings blur spatial boundaries.
-
Cement surfaces from slate create warmth against the cooler light.
-
Seasonal sun changes emotional tone — from winter cold to summer heat — embedding time itself into architecture.
The result is an experience that fosters inner reflection and emotional connection, where architecture becomes a mirror of memory and meaning.
Fantasy Gallery: Technology and Textures
Beyond the narrow slanted corridor lies a fantastical gallery, a multi-functional space for tournaments and art salons.
-
Dark volcanic-textured slate combines with metal walls.
-
LED screen expands the space infinitely, stimulating imagination and blending reality with virtual.
-
The ceiling continues the diamond-cut motif, surrounding visitors with angular drama.
Here, slate is not just a building material but an active narrator of stories and technologies.
Courtyard and Poetic Calm
Stepping outside, designers reveal an open courtyard with a slate pathway and tea pavilion. This space contrasts the intensity of galleries with tranquil, almost monastic calm.
-
Natural light, slate textures and simple garden elements evoke Eastern poetic traditions.
-
Movement follows the principle of each step revealing a panoramic view, offering surprises at every turn.
-
The courtyard becomes a place for tea, reflection and nature connection.
More Than an Exhibition Hall
Layers of geometric deconstruction, light manipulation and spatial storytelling transform the exhibition hall into:
-
A performance space,
-
An artistic gallery,
-
A social place for reflection and exchange.
Slate becomes more than a product — it is redefined as a material of memory, poetry and human experience.
Why This Project Matters
The Spanish exhibition hall GOJE from slate by Topway Space Design questions the role of an exhibition hall in modern architecture. It shows that material space can transcend commerce, becoming an artistic, contemplative environment where visitors interact with light, geometry and emotions, as they would with products.
