Located on the slopes of Itaipava in Brazil's mountainous region, this stone house by Architectare combines traditional inspiration with modern practicality. The design was created for an elderly couple seeking a simplified vacation experience. The house provides ease of maintenance, security, and comfort while preserving the natural slope of the site.

Architecture Based on Practicality

The couple, who sold their previous vacation home, wanted a dwelling that would resemble a secure apartment, where they could simply lock the door and leave without worries. This inspired a high-performance plan: all main areas—bedroom, public and service rooms—are located on the first floor, ensuring accessibility and minimizing daily effort. Guest bedrooms are situated on the upper level, designed for family visits and future flexibility.

Elevated Design and Landscape Integration

The house is situated on a small platform, which defines the entrance and places the main volume partially above the sloping landscape. This smart placement maximizes views and creates an impressive silhouette on the slope. A large terrace with infinity pool extends from the front, maintaining a sense of openness and relaxation despite its compact program.

Stone, Light, and Provence Inspiration

Visionally, the dwelling is inspired by Provence architecture, expressed through a rigid stone facade that anchors the building into the landscape. However, within this solidity Architectare introduced playfulness and lightness. The offset masonry form adjusts ceiling heights and leads to a glass balcony, allowing natural light into the interiors throughout the day. This gentle choreography of light and shadow adds dynamism to what would otherwise be a solid stone shell.

A House of Balance and Modesty

The stone house embodies a balance between modesty and warmth: the stone cladding of the facade, conveying permanence and protection, contrasts with bright interiors that celebrate transparency and movement. Architectare's design reflects both the practical needs of an elderly couple and a desire for peaceful retreat deeply rooted in the context of the slope.
