House on Pambata Lane Built by Metropole Architects
Metropole Architects completed an impressive project in the South African town of Shaka Rock, near KwaZulu-Natal. Named the House on Pambata Lane, this outstanding two-story home features a simple yet open exterior design with an emphasis on maximizing natural light for the interior spaces, which were also designed with an open floor plan.

The design aimed to make the most of the beauty of the forested terrain. With such dense bush surrounding the house, privacy and direct sunlight were not concerns, so we could use a large amount of glazing for views and natural light, as well as strengthen the feeling of an indoor/outdoor lifestyle that our clients desired.
The design explored concepts of volumetric play, including a double-height stair space, high glazing and sloped ceilings on the upper floor, as well as high ceilings throughout the house. The main bedroom is positioned above a covered terrace below, and the concept of using this form aims to 'extend' the main bedroom toward the view of Fish Eagle Pond, as well as create a sense of movement and drama in the architecture.
The private and peaceful forest setting allows wildlife to approach the house as closely as possible. Residents are happy to see giant divine fishermen on the upper terrace each morning and often visit deer and hedgehogs in the garden below. The extensive use of wood, metal and stone by the interior designer gives the house an organic feel. Each room was designed to flow into the outside world, highlighting a sense of space and unity with nature.
