Halloween: What kind of party are we talking about?
PinterestPopularly known as Halloween party, this holiday is celebrated every year on October 31. Although it's closely linked to North American culture, Halloween doesn't originate from Uncle Sam's lands. Its origins are much older and date back to ancient Celts who inhabited the region of Ireland.
Many centuries ago, the Celts celebrated a festival called Samhain, which marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter.
The Celts believed that during this time, spirits of the dead could return to the world and reunite with their families. During the festival, they lit bonfires and wore masks to ward off evil spirits, while lanterns helped light the way for good souls.
As centuries passed and Christianity spread, dates considered pagan began to be accepted by the Church in an effort to 'christianize' people. Samhain was no exception. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III adopted All Saints' Day, which coincided with the Celtic celebration of Samhain.
Although October 31 was considered All Hallows' Eve, the evening before All Saints' Day, which later shortened to what we know today as Halloween.
