Studio Arches built a 415 square meter house on the site of an old manor in the suburbs of Vilnius (Lithuania), combining modern architectural approaches with local building traditions. The basement floor is partially hidden in the slope. Thanks to the dark slate used for its finishing, it visually dissolves into the shadow of the hill. Only the volume of the first floor, clad in wood and seemingly suspended above the surrounding landscape, is fully visible.
Wood from pine was used as the main cladding material, as it is not only characteristic of local forests but also has a beautiful texture that over time acquires a noble silver tone. Wood is attached to a steel profile system using special plastic fixators. The natural grain of the wood creates a vertical graphic pattern supported by rows of slate cladding on the basement floor and metal railing lines of the terrace. Expressive vertical graphics of the facades rhyme with the trunks of surrounding trees.
