Villa Dieu par Alexis Dornier : villa tropicale sculpturale sur les collines de Tambak, Lombok
Located on one of the highest and steepest plots in Tambak, Lombok, Villa Dieu represents a substantial residence of 1151 m², designed by Alexis Dornier. Completed in 2024, this villa redefines the concept of tropical mountain housing by combining architecture and earth art.
Architecture shaped by the slope
The steep topography of Tambak became the foundation for the architectural concept, prompting a vertical arrangement of functional zones across multiple levels. At the base are the garage and main entrance, hidden in the slope. Ascending further reveals public areas — a smooth sequence of leisure, dining and kitchen zones, followed by a private family section, each designed for separate household use.
At the summit rises a circular platform for yoga and contemplation, offering panoramic views of the surrounding hills and the Indian Ocean — a tranquil sanctuary for reflection.
Geometry inspired by nature
The villa's plan is built around concentric circles and radial segments, echoing the natural contours of the hill. Roofs are pitched and strategically opened, while volumes descend through terraced levels, giving the house a sculptural landscape appearance rather than traditional mass.
This geometric clarity allows the villa to sit firmly on the ground without overwhelming its dramatic setting.
Interior-Exterior Space as a Lifestyle
The design of Villa Dieu emphasizes the inseparable connection between interior and exterior spaces. The pool is integrated into living nature, expanding from internal zones outward through level changes and soft transitions.
Material choices enhance this harmony:
Textured wood for ceilings and suspended structures,
Palmiani white stone for flooring,
White walls as a minimalist backdrop.
Together, these elements anchor the villa in a tropical climate, creating a restrained and elegant color palette.

Dialogue with Mid-Century Masters
Certain roof elements and structures recall mid-century masters such as John Lautner, particularly how architecture becomes a lens for perceiving the landscape. As with Lautner, Villa Dieu embraces bold geometry without losing respect for the site.
Here, the villa is not a loud statement but rather a presence with confidence and calm, balancing expression and modesty.
Expressive yet Nature-Aware Architecture
Villa Dieu is more than just housing; it's an architectural response to the land itself. Integrating concentric geometry, a restrained material palette and mid-century inspiration, Alexis Dornier created a home that seems always relevant and place-bound.
Sitting prominently in the Lombok landscape, Villa Dieu reflects a new chapter of tropical architecture in Indonesia — where bold forms and natural modesty coexist in harmony.
