Japanese Minimalism in Australia

When the client approached Maguire + Devine Architects with a request to design the perfect retreat for relaxation and solitude, she wanted a modern design that reflected the minimalism of a traditional Japanese home. The architects not only created an autonomous retreat but also designed built-in furniture to ensure the home fulfilled all its intended functions.

Large windows and sliding doors open the interior to nature. Tall trees frame the living space to the north, while a panoramic view of the landscape unfolds from the southern side. Two terraces on the eastern and western sides of the house help connect with nature, offering views of morning and afternoon sunlight, or a chance to unwind in the hot tub.

The off-grid home features a rainwater harvesting system and solar panels, as well as a roof hatch that maximizes natural lighting.
