Renovated Stone House in the Hudson River Valley
The Old Stone House project, developed by TAKATINA Studio, was realized in a picturesque mountain corner of the Hudson River Valley in the USA. Old Stone House, which translates to 'old stone house' in English, is located on a 2.7-hectare plot and belongs to a young couple for weekend relaxation.
At the initial stage, the two-story building with a total area of 186 square meters was dismantled down to three stone walls and a foundation, then reduced to a single-story structure with an area of 93 square meters, plus 28 square meters of additional space and a basement.
The client liked the original stone masonry typical for this region, and wanted to incorporate it into the new design. The renovated roof and wall became a central concept, encompassing the existing stone structure and giving the building the form of a traditional barn permeated with natural light. The texture of rough stone combined with a black metal roof and cedar wood cladding creates an impression of monolithic unity.
The modestly sized bedrooms and bathroom are grouped on the eastern side of the new house. The ceilings in the bedrooms are painted white. This modern countryside design with carefully planned window placement looks perfect in soft morning light.
