Private Blue Sail House in Los Angeles
The Blue Sail house, presented by EYRC Architects, is located on a hillside with an ocean view in a typical residential area of Los Angeles, USA. This project became a large-scale update of a rather dull layout that failed to utilize its obvious advantages: picturesque views.
Although the total square footage did not increase after internal walls were demolished, the interior space was completely reorganized to reveal an impressive panorama of the Pacific Ocean. The living room, dining area, office, and kitchen are all merged into one shared space facing the ocean through a 2-meter-high and 12-meter-wide opening. The main bedroom was also redesigned as a unified complex of interconnected areas. There are no doors separating the bedroom, bathroom, and toilet, and, of course, all these spaces offer ocean views as well. A simple palette of flooring materials, exterior wall plaster, Rhinezink titanium-zinc facade panels, and walnut wood cabinetry became a well-thought-out design strategy that ties the building to its surroundings.
The owner, a working unmarried woman with grown children, volunteers at the clinic run by Loyola Law School, striving for justice for those wrongly imprisoned. Now, after moving here, the house has become her favorite place to spend time with family and friends.
