The Bigwood Residence, designed by the architectural firm Olson Kundig in Idaho, USA, is a large house with an area of 6500 square meters that seems to grow out of the harsh mountain landscape.
Customers wanted a modern house that would feel authentic in the desolate mountain environment. Therefore, it looks brutal and rough; the client called this style 'mountain-industrial'.
All parts of the building that touch the ground are made of stone or concrete, and those that rise above the ground surface are made of glass and steel. The roof is made of corrugated stainless steel and has a slight slope.
Wooden interior finishing creates a feeling of warmth and safety during cold periods when the temperature can drop to minus 20 degrees.
Two wings of the building are connected by a steel and glass bridge; its southern wall rotates around its axis upwards and can be fully opened using a powerful mechanism specially developed for this project.
