The Sisters House is the name of a project carried out by Anik Péloquin architecte studio in La Malbaie, Canada.
The new 102 square meter house—"the younger sister"—is clad in American larch. It houses two bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, and a living room. The modest size and unique roof shape create a volume that harmonizes with "the older sister" and the landscape, while meeting the needs of the inhabitants.
The roof's sloping sides on the west and south allow the external walls to remain low, matching the scale of the old house and trees on the distant shore. On the east and north sides, the roof rises steeply, echoing nearby trees and resembling a church spire, alluding to the history of the place.
Inside, the roof's contours shape the volumes of the living room and the owners' bedroom—the only room located on the second floor. The warm pine wood used throughout the interior emits a soft glow.
The project emerged from reflections on integrating the new building into its natural surroundings. The structure is not meant to dominate the landscape but rather to become part of it.
