Built originally by the first owner, a lumberjack, as a shed, this small house in Sutton, Canada was later transformed by its subsequent owners into a forest retreat. The La Colombière project, executed by YH2 Studio, represents the final stage of transforming a simple single-story building into a modern country home that spans three floors.

By applying such principles, not a single tree was cut down during the renovation of the building. Heavy machinery was also avoided, which could have harmed the natural environment.

Reminiscent of the bark of surrounding coniferous trees, the exterior of the building was clad in dark cedar. In contrast, the interior is designed in white tones. Materials and structures from the previous phase were preserved so that the new addition feels like a natural extension of the existing space, rather than an intrusive element.

The covered terrace on the upper floor resembles a white bench from which one can enjoy the surrounding forest. The cabin itself looks like a bird’s nest nestled among tree branches.
