Cozy Cabin in Canadian Forests
Built originally by the first owner, a lumberjack, as a shed, this small house in Sutphin, Canada, was later transformed by its subsequent owners into a forest retreat. The La Colombière project, executed by YH2 Studio, represents the final phase of converting a simple single-story structure into a modern country home that spans three floors.
By applying these principles, not a single tree was cut down during the building's renovation. Heavy machinery was also avoided to prevent any harm to the natural environment.
Resembling the bark of surrounding coniferous trees, the exterior of the building was clad in dark cedar. In contrast, the interior is designed in white tones. Materials and structure from the previous phase were preserved so that the new addition feels like a natural continuation of the existing space rather than an intrusive addition.
The covered terrace on the upper floor resembles a white bench from which one can enjoy the surrounding forest. The cabin itself looks like a bird’s nest nestled among tree branches.
