Eco-Friendly House in Johannesburg
Eco-Friendly House in Johannesburg
A light-filled unique eco-friendly house with a floor area of 923 square meters, designed by Nico van der Meulen Architects studio, located in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The steel artistic object of Regardt van der Meulen's work greets visitors through a wide opening hidden behind a monolithic gray wall under an ornate column structure.
After passing through the entrance area, the transparency of the house becomes completely evident thanks to the see-through spaces of the multi-level hall, living room, pool, and water feature in the garden, as well as the dining room, veranda, and kitchen.
The glass and steel construction allows the entire living room/kitchen area to fully open up using folding doors and provides access to the veranda, pool, and garden.
A LED-lit suspended concrete and wood staircase with a balustrade of vertical steel rods and wall-mounted illuminated railings forms a clear graphic element on a smooth background. A hidden sliding door allows the owner to isolate the upper floor from the lower one for security purposes.
Geothermal systems are used for heating and cooling the house. For this purpose, nine boreholes were drilled to a depth of 100 meters and a special room in the basement was designed for equipment. The roof is equipped with photovoltaic panels, and a rainwater collection system is also provided.
