Cottage for Slow Living in Australia22 photos
Branch Studio Architects designed a small wooden cottage in Victoria, Australia, prioritizing craftsmanship and materiality over technology.
From the very first discussion with the client, it became clear that this building should not have the quality of finished, distinct spaces, but instead possess flexibility, allowing the space to easily transform from a living room into a workshop, library, or gathering place with neighbors on weekends.
In line with the philosophy of slow living, architects deliberately chose to avoid high-tech solutions, aiming to fully embody the ideas of sanctuary and slowing down. Each wall of the building is designed to include components that can be manually folded, opened, and closed, enabling control over space and modification of the building's program. Rather than pressing a button on a remote control, cottage residents must fold and unfold various elements manually, engaging with the space they inhabit and becoming an inseparable part of it rather than detached owners.
Nature connection is also a key feature of the building. The constant croaking of frogs, dancing light reflections on the ceiling, ducks gliding past, and dense vegetation swaying in the wind create a calming atmosphere of harmony and peace.
