A red brick house from the 1920s in Washington, USA — an example of a successful building renovation adapted to modern aesthetic and technical standards. The project was implemented by the architecture firm NADAAA.
Although the character of the northern facade remained virtually unchanged — formal, closed, and calm — the southern side facing Rock Creek has undergone significant changes. Large glazed areas and more precise proportions between rooms and windows determined the new architectural appearance of the southern facade — less formal, open, and in dialogue with nature.
Interior finishes were made using laminated plywood, which also served as a material for numerous structural elements and built-in furniture, giving unity to the different interiors of the house.
The most important architectural solution was the organization of two multi-level spaces. The first connects the entrance floor with the lower garden level, where the new living room is located. The second vertical space extends from the entrance to the former attic, now a loft, crowned with a roof light.
