A 150 square meter cottage in Geilo— one of the most popular ski resorts in Norway— was designed by Lund Hagem Architects. The building, located at 982 meters above sea level, is built to withstand harsh Norwegian winters.
Retaining walls and surfaces facing the surrounding landscape and exposed to winter winds and snowstorms are made of concrete with a wood-textured finish. To create the impression of a continuous facade, the pattern of vertical joints in the concrete surfaces matches the size of the wooden cladding boards. The dark-colored building contrasts with the white winter landscape, giving the impression that nature is approaching it even closer.
Inside, dark concrete floors and dark oak panels create a cozy intimate atmosphere. In addition to the main windows, the living room is illuminated by a long glazed opening in the ceiling.
The main volume features a two-level living room with kitchen and dining area, elevated several steps above the relaxation zone, where the suspended fireplace is a key accent.
The owners' bedroom is located near the living room; a staircase under a glazed roof leads to the main entrance.
The adjacent guest wing contains two bedrooms and is separated from the garage by a staircase embedded into the hillside, connecting the courtyard with the garden.
