House for a Doctor in Bangalore, India
On the outskirts of a rapidly developing area of the city of Bangalore, India, the Architecture Paradigm studio built a multi-layered and multifunctional house with an area of 987 square meters. Designed for a doctor who intends to retire in the near future and devote himself to a varied lifestyle, this residence represents a complex collage of contradictory functions and desires, embodying a series of binary oppositions in its architecture: collective versus individual, public versus private, formal versus informal, suddenness versus slowness, pomp versus intimacy.
The courtyard serves as a connecting element between the uncontrollable nature and the stable architectural form, adding another layer to the series of binary oppositions: inside or outside. The house also includes two additional courtyards, all three together forming three distinct zones: a transit zone (front courtyard), a public zone (large courtyard), and a private zone (a secluded courtyard at the back of the building).
A series of faceted forms are layered over the structure composed of three rectangular volumes, creating a multi-layered space in the house that associatively links it to the rocky stepped plot on which it is located.
The complex geometric structure of the house is skillfully complemented by meticulously orchestrated windows and openings. The connections they create between internal and external spaces overcome the sequential logic of movement from one room to another, softening the established boundaries between programmatic zones.
