Modern Wooden House for Multiple Generations of Family

Company Honkarakenne Oyj presented at the housing fair 2015 in Vantaa, Finland, the Savukvartsi house — a modern log cabin for three generations of one family. The 239 square meter residence was designed and built by architects Jaakko and Elisabeth Parkkonen as their own home, bringing to life the dream of a young couple and their parents for a large family nest where multiple generations will live together.

The young family's bedrooms are located on the second floor. High ceilings create a sense of spaciousness, large French windows fill the rooms with light. Here also resides the home office and library.

The compact apartment of the senior generation, consisting of a bedroom, kitchen, living room and bathroom, occupies part of the first floor.

Notable features of the house include its eco-friendliness, energy efficiency and long-term usability, which are due to the application of high-tech construction methods by Honka.

The architects used natural materials and tried to avoid plastic. The building is heated using solar thermal collectors and a water-heating fireplace. The roof pitch is calculated to provide the ideal angle relative to the sun.

The house is built from Honka Fusion timber, which does not shrink, and features insulation made of wood fiber. The use of Honka Fusion wall structures allowed the development of a modern wooden construction with urban, minimalist details that will serve many generations of family.

The acoustic environment in a log house is very calm. Combined with the natural warmth of natural wood and good air quality inside the rooms, this creates a very comfortable living space.

Natural spruce wood treated with iron sulfate was used for the exterior cladding, giving it a beautiful gray tone.
