Noble Simplicity of a Taiwan Apartment

An apartment with a total area of 168 square meters, designed by HAO Design studio in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, is intended for a young married couple with a young daughter. The husband is a metallurgy engineer who wants to see industrial style elements in the interior; the wife is a flight attendant with refined taste, who loves various cultures and new experiences. She wanted to bring into her home a simple yet expressive Japanese style with Scandinavian design touches.
The grainy texture of cement walls, natural solid wood plywood made from oak, and furniture in a stained wood finish were chosen to introduce elements of Japanese style that the wife dreamed of.
Working on the layout of the apartment, architects aimed to achieve openness and visual permeability, allowing natural light to flow freely into the interior space, creating a rich play of light and shadow on the gray wall background throughout the day. The sliding door leading to a multi-functional room designed in Japanese style creates flexible connection between it and the living room, making the space more functional and improving air circulation.
The aesthetics of simplicity embodied in this project proves once again that it is not about strict material constraints or desires. On the contrary, it calls for independent reflection on what we truly need and teaches us to rid ourselves of the unnecessary in order to achieve perfect harmony and practicality.
