Two-Story Apartment of Architect Sergey Makhno24 photos
The Wabi Sabi apartment of architect Sergey Makhno, who leads the studio Sergey Makhno Architects, was created for his family in Kyiv. The main task was to satisfy all family members — two creative adults and three children.
This apartment is a bridge between minimalist Japanese and vibrant Ukrainian styles. The architect interpreted inherited traditions, transferring them into a modern technological environment.
Originally, the apartment had a total area of 110 square meters, and the terraces added another 73 square meters. This was not enough to fully realize all of the architect's ideas. By reducing the terrace area on the perimeter of the second floor, Sergey Makhno managed to include three bedrooms for all family members, as well as a small wardrobe and a glass bathroom in the main bedroom.
On the first floor of the apartment are a guest restroom, a wardrobe, and a spacious kitchen-dining room. All furniture for the project was made by Ukrainian craftsmen based on the architect's sketches.
Comfortable minimalist chairs, a large wooden table, and a collection of author-designed light fixtures called "Sky and Earth" fill the space. A wooden staircase leads to the second floor. Rooms are connected through portals styled in a similar fashion.
In addition, Sergey Makhno is a collector, so there are many antique items in the house. The interior features ancient vases from the Trypillian culture and a 17th-century table.
