33 Square Meter Apartment in Hong Kong
The interior of JAAK's studio transformed a 33 square meter apartment with two bedrooms in Hong Kong, China into an open-plan space. The new residents, a childless couple, did not need a second bedroom. The clients wanted a modern, bright and flexible living space. This aligns with the trend of increasing demand for housing for childless couples, which should have different layouts than traditional Chinese homes designed for large families and divided into several enclosed rooms.
Wide window sills of large windows were equipped with seating areas; along one side of the apartment ran a hallway-like space that increases the amount of natural light from the windows and refers to Japanese architectural traditions.
Functional divisions in the house are created through custom-made furniture, with only one fully enclosed space being the bathroom hidden behind a secret door.
Behind the desk is the bedroom, accessible via two steps hidden behind built-in furniture units. The opening between the bed and desk is fitted with a curtain to provide isolation during work and sleep.
Storage spaces are included in custom elements as a space-saving solution. A row of wardrobes is located above the bathroom, while the bed is elevated on a platform to create storage underneath.
To avoid cluttering the small apartment, technical equipment is also concealed behind built-in furniture. The clean aesthetic of the interior is reflected in the choice of abstract graphics designed by the firm's partners based on four films about the universe.
