APPAREIL architecture modernized a 167 square meter townhouse in Montreal (Canada) for a young family, giving it a Nordic and fresh character. To renovate the typical duplex, architects chose a minimalist and concise Scandinavian style. Firstly, architects transformed two separate apartments into one family residence. Simple and calm facade design corresponds to the typical style of duplexes and harmonizes with the surrounding development.
To separate spaces into distinct zones without adding partitions, the project authors played with different levels and volumes. The living room located in the center of the first floor is recessed about 40 centimeters compared to the rest of the room, forming a certain frame in space and creating a sense of comfort. In the spacious and bright loft floor, glass partitions are used to establish visual connection with the first floor. The staircase, now in the focus of attention, also has glass railings, allowing light to spread freely throughout the house.
Before renovation, bioclimatic studies were conducted. The obtained information, for example, about natural light influx and heat consumption, helped to reframe the space accordingly and had a positive impact on building performance. The polished concrete floor was chosen mainly for ecological reasons; it reflects light and retains solar heat, which is an important factor, especially in winter. New high-efficiency walls ensure reduced heating and cooling costs.
Special attention was paid to the use of local materials. The staircase, part of the floor, and custom-built built-in furniture are all made from locally sourced ash wood. The front facade of the house is clad with brick made from recycled components, while the back side is finished with white cedar wood native to the region.
