Balcony House by Adolfo Schlieper Architects | Rolando, Argentina
Dialogue Between Architecture and Landscape
Situated on the green outskirts of Rolando, near Rosario, the balcony house by Adolfo Schlieper Arquitectos achieves a delicate balance between structure, privacy, and connection to nature. Designed for a family seeking solitude and openness, the residential house seamlessly integrates with its environment, offering a contemporary interpretation of life in harmony with the landscape.
Architecture Integrated with Nature
Located within a secured community where architecture gradually dissolves into green space, the house adopts a design language that prioritizes openness and continuity. The entire structure faces south, while its north side remains open to sunlight and views of the garden—a deliberate choice to capture winter sun and enhance pool usability during summer months.
The building composition includes solid brick walls on the first floor, ensuring structural stability and privacy while extending outward to merge with the surrounding garden. These walls act as spatial dividers rather than barriers, guiding movement through the house and framing scenic views of nature.
Spacial Flow and Light
Inside, the design transforms corridors into an experience. Hallways and transitional zones are not dark or secondary; instead, they invite light, air, and vegetation inward. Small internal courtyards segment the plan, dissolving boundaries between interior and exterior. One such courtyard is located at the main entrance, where a recessed terrace conceals the entry, creating both curiosity and privacy.
This spatial play extends vertically. The master bedroom suite is positioned on the upper level, dramatically projecting from the front facade. This movement not only defines the project's name but also provides shelter for the car below. The elevated volume appears to float above the solid base, highlighting the dialogue between mass and void, weight and lightness.
Material Expression and Structure
Materials play a key role in conveying the house's identity. Brick masonry, with smooth joints and delicate details, anchors the structure to the ground, reflecting local traditions and employing a minimalist language. The overhanging upper volume, rendered in light tones, creates an elegant contrast, emphasizing the architectural balance between permanence and suspension.
Open Living and Connection
A standalone barbecue pavilion expands the outdoor living experience, providing a social and recreational hub for family gatherings and events. Oriented toward the garden and pool, this space captures framed views of the property edges, reinforcing the project's central concept—openness and visual continuity.
Through precise composition and sensitive materiality, the balcony house reflects Adolfo Schlieper Arquitectos' ongoing exploration in residential design, combining context, climate, and contemporary form. It is architecture that invites contemplation and relaxation—a home that feels both grounded and free.
