Apartments in Almaty by Kvadrat Architects: Quiet Luxury in the Elite Central District, Kazakhstan
At the heart of the prestigious residential complex Central in Almaty, Kvadrat Architects created exquisite apartments that embody quiet luxury — a harmonious blend of timeless design, functional layout, and emotional resonance. Located in the historic Golden Square where Almaty's cultural and political elite live, these 1399 sq ft apartments pay homage to architectural heritage and modern life.
Living as a Status Symbol: The Central Residential Complex
Situated on the only new residential district along Tulebaev Street, these apartments draw their surroundings from the Stalin-era architecture and greenery. Rather than imitating the environment, the design conveys its atmosphere — modesty, grace, and dignity.
Design Philosophy: Subconscious Understanding of Space
Founders of Kvadrat Architects Sergey Bekmukhanbetov and Rustam Minnekhanov describe their approach as "reading client needs — even when they're not spoken aloud." The result is an interior that transcends fleeting trends. Minimalism here does not mean restraint, but rather emotional precision.
"A purely minimalist interior couldn't have emerged in this context. We immerse ourselves in the ambience, analyzing its emotional and spatial codes," they note.
Quiet Luxury: Materials That Speak
The designers' choice of wood and marble was not decorative but narrative. These classic materials carry the weight of time and tradition. Marble floors reflect ambient light upward, filling walls and ceilings with natural glow. The entire interior breathes rhythm and clarity.
Maximizing Functionality in Load-Bearing Structures
The seismic activity of Almaty means most walls are load-bearing, limiting open-plan possibilities. Nevertheless, the team rethought apartment flow by merging two narrow zones — kitchen and living room — into one central space that encourages interaction.
Lighting as a Design Language
In this project, light is not just a tool but a co-author. Architectural lighting shapes form and space, while decorative fixtures add poetry. The TsentrSvet ceiling lighting system provides even, eco-friendly illumination, while the Pablo lamp by Davide Groppi brings emotion and artistry to the environment — where technology meets timeless craftsmanship.
Living Room: Open Elegance
The main bedroom features spacious windows that allow natural light to shape the mood. In a compact space, the walk-in closet was not separated but became a decorative element. The Poliform wardrobe system with frosted glass, metal frame, and leather interior offers storage with elegance and understatement. The interior is further accentuated by the Jean-Marie Massaud Yume bed with a wide leather headboard and high-quality details, imparting horizontal grace to the room.
Material Harmony and Visual Clarity
Walls clad in natural linen textile panels, soft upholstery, and wooden blinds create a tactile rhythm that filters light into gentle shadows changing with each day. Everything is intentional — from proportions to textures — created for tranquility, not ostentation.
The Design Code is Built on Calm
The apartments avoid visual overload, replacing it with deliberate lines and meaningful contrasts. Expression is subtle — not loud accents but in how light interacts with marble, linen, and polished metal.
