In Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, architects 21 Arquitectos designed House 178, completed in 2023. This house perfectly blends bold architectural style with sloping natural terrain. Located on a rise within a private residential complex, House 178 redefines modern living through spatial innovation, material richness, and harmonious relationships with nature.

Architectural Concept

The design of House 178 directly responds to the topographical features. Since the back of the lot is 1.5 meters higher than street level, architects used this condition to lift the main structure, while creating a semi-basement under the main level. This solution forms a dynamic architectural presence and integrates the dwelling into the landscape.

The exterior is characterized by solid geometric forms, sculptural cuts, and illuminated voids. The result is a volumetric composition that appears to float above the slope, intensifying the dialogue between the house and its natural environment.

Entrance Sequence and Central Atrium

A side staircase carved into the slope leads to the main door made of oak. Upon entering, guests begin a spatial journey: a compact hall suddenly opens into a three-level core, held by a central atrium with black olive wood. A glass bridge connects this vertical element, visually linking all four levels and allowing natural light to flow through the house.

Interior Layout and Program

The house is organized in separate yet interconnected layers:

• First Floor: A free-flowing open layout minimizes structural elements to maximize space and light. Social areas open onto the rear terrace and pool, intertwining with a shared forest zone. This level also houses a home office, full bathroom, washing machine, and pantry.

• Upper Floor: Designed for privacy, it contains three bedrooms and a master suite with a shower room and walk-in closet.
