How to Visually Increase Ceiling Height: 6 Effective Methods
Effective tricks to fool the eye
This three-room apartment is located in a Moscow panel house of series P-44. The ceiling height here is only 2.4 meters. To prevent the low ceiling from spoiling the interior and creating a sense of stuffiness, the project author Elizaveta Matveyko used several design tricks.
Light TonesThe most effective way to solve the problem of low ceilings is to choose any light shade for wall finishing. In this living room, not only the walls but also the ceiling were painted in a light color — a single color visually blurs the boundary between surfaces and makes the ceiling appear higher.
High DoorsA semi-transparent door of extended length was made between the kitchen and narrow corridor. It emphasizes ceiling height and visually enlarges the living space.
Stylish VerticalsThe wall opposite the window was decorated with monochrome decorative panels in the color of the walls. Lines extending to the full height of the wall — a winning pattern for apartments with low ceilings. They create a visual vertical and add volume to the room.
Low FurnitureFor the living room, low furniture was chosen: a neat TV cabinet, a small shelf, and low chairs. The greater the distance from furniture to the ceiling, the higher it appears.
Long CurtainsAnother effective way to raise the ceiling is to position the curtain rod as high as possible and hang dense monochrome curtains. This will definitely create a visual illusion of a high ceiling.
Baseboard in Wall ColorIn the office, ceiling baseboards were painted in the same color as the walls. This allowed extending the walls a few centimeters upward. Along the perimeter of the ceiling, a contrasting raspberry-colored edge was installed — every time entering the room, the eye will 'read' the bright border, thus visually raising the ceiling.
