Before and After: How We Transformed the Bathroom in a Stalin-era Apartment
Courageous and stylish solutions for a small space
This vibrant and stylish bathroom was designed by Tatiana Leitan together with her team at Leytan Design in a 59 sq. m flat. The main goal was to create a modern and comfortable environment while preserving the atmosphere of the old house. We show you how the bathroom turned out.

Originally, the bathroom was separate. The toilet was converted into a laundry area, and the bathtub was turned into a shower. The old finish was completely removed and replaced with new plumbing.

The floor was tiled with geometric small-format tiles and installed as a continuous layout. The pattern adds lightness and dynamism to the design. Walls were finished with 15x15 cm square tiles, referencing the solutions commonly seen in Stalin-era apartments.

The bathroom was separated from the main space using a glass partition. It keeps the room feeling open and airy, without visual clutter. A towel rack was chosen to match the color of the shower and sink mixer.

The contrast stands out with the navy-colored custom-made cabinet and blue door. They harmonize beautifully with the tile tones. The sink was chosen as a monolithic unit with a countertop in the same blue shade. The solid surface has no unnecessary joints, the basin is easy to clean and does not leak.

The mirror above the sink doubles the space, adding light and depth. The striking backlighting makes the room cozy, warm, and comfortable.
