Bathroom, Like in a Hotel: What Ideas You Can Implement at Home

Colored grout, a large mirror, and other simple solutions. Adapt them for your home bathrooms

We selected seven hotels designed with attention to comfort and aesthetics. Rooms and lobbies are worth exploring during your free time, but now we focus on bathrooms—more precisely, approaches to their decoration. We've gathered the most universal ideas that suit both guest bathrooms in country houses and small bathrooms in Khrushchyovkas.

"Living" Bathroom

In the bio-hotel Gut Sonnenhausen near Munich, the washbasin area is located right in the room and continues the interior design. Here there's a wooden mirror, a fishing lamp, and a buffet that’s easier to imagine in a hallway than in a bathroom. But trying it out in practice is definitely worth it—this approach is just too cozy.

In such "living" bathrooms, tiles are laid only in the "wet" zones. Other walls are painted with moisture-resistant paint, for example, a cool beige tone, as here.

Unusual Vanity Table

Careful: this solution will draw all attention to itself! But the rest of the decor can be chosen neutral. Imagine a bathroom in the Parisian hotel Le Belleval without botanical-patterned tiles—this doesn't make the interior less interesting, right? (We don't have anything against tiles—they're also very appealing to us).

How to Replicate?

A similar vanity table is available from Duravit. For the German brand, it was designed by Philippe Starck, and it should be noted that the legendary Frenchman's signature is clearly visible in the design.

The vanity table is slightly over a meter long, so that together with the washbasin, a toothbrush cup, soap dish, and other essentials fit in. The bottom shelf can hold towels and cosmetics, and underneath, scales or slippers can be placed. And they also say that vanities aren't practical!

If a plain white vanity seems too conservative, there are four finishing options to choose from.

Colored Walls + Colored Grout

Look at the upper parts of the walls in the bathrooms of the Condominio Monti hotel in Rome. There, it’s barely visible that the tiles were laid not to the ceiling but up to the door height, and then the wall was painted with paint and grout matched in tone. This approach isn't new, but it always looks fresh.

Large Mirror

The rooms in the boutique hotel Redstone in Riga are monochromatic, in blue, pink, and milk tones. The bathrooms are doll-like, and everything should be noted there: printed ceramic tiles on the floor, interesting lights, and large monochrome tiles against painted walls in the washbasin area.

But we recommend paying attention to the idea of a large round mirror. Play with scale: place something similar in shape but small next to it, for example, a mini washbasin and a wall light, as done here.

How to Replicate?

In the line of plumbing fixtures, furniture, and accessories Happy D 2 Plus, Duravit offers great round mirrors—just the kind we need.

There are two sizes—diameter 700 and 900 mm. Both variants come with backlighting and smart controls. The mirrors feature defogging function for fogged glass and atmospheric lighting mode.

For those who paint directly in the bathroom, there's a useful feature—color adjustment. The backlight can be set to warm or cool glow.

Retro Look

Today, modern classicism won't surprise anyone, but true retro is rare in bathrooms. If this aesthetic resonates with you, explore the solutions in the bathrooms of the Sanders hotel in Copenhagen. Here are four ideas to note: vintage mixers, mirrors with markings, small tiles with decorative inserts on the floor, and, of course, a classic console washbasin.

Freestanding Bathtub

When the Dolomites are visible from the window, one doesn’t have to overthink the design. However, in the Peter Pichler Architecture project office, they thought differently and came up with a bunch of great ideas for hotel bathrooms.

We like the wooden shelf-ladder for bath accessories. However, a floor-standing washbasin with mixers mounted from the wall with a mirrored surface—no, because it’s stylish but impractical: you’ll have to constantly wipe water droplets off the mirror.

Which idea from this hotel is worth implementing? Definitely the freestanding bathtub—everyone has dreamed of one. We recommend considering options without legs, like here—then you won’t have to clean hard-to-reach spots under the tub.

How to Replicate?

The ideal solution for bringing this idea to life was created by Danish designer Sissel Malling for Duravit. In the Luv line of plumbing fixtures, furniture, and accessories, there are classic freestanding baths and convenient wall-hybrid baths. These baths fit tightly against the wall, so water doesn't spill into the far corners of the room.

The baths are made from composite material DuraSolid®, with beautiful thin walls and flawless geometric forms. Sissel equipped them with a Bluetooth-enabled sound system—perfect for those who don’t want to part with their favorite music even during bath time.

Styling with Concrete

That this bathroom from the minimalist hotel Bursa in Kyiv is obvious from the text on the mirror’s backlight. Designers decorating hotel rooms correctly noticed that concrete is an excellent companion for minimalist interiors. Choose micro-concrete if you can afford the finishing, or ceramic tiles that look like concrete if a budget-friendly option is needed.
