What You Didn't Know About Peonies, Lilacs, and Roses: 12 Amazing Facts
Such familiar and common flowers as peonies, lilacs, and roses grow not only on most garden plots but also in city courtyards. But what else do we know about them?
What could be more beautiful than warm summer evenings? The singing of birds, the chirping of cicadas, and the delicate, heavy scent of garden flowers — fragrant lilacs, bright roses, and, of course, luxurious peonies. We've gathered the most interesting facts about them, many of which will be a surprise to you!
Clump Rose
Perhaps the easiest and most effective way to decorate a garden plot is to plant clump roses. They can beautify the facade, porch, or roof of a house, a fence, or a gazebo.
They can also help hide flaws — for example, decorate an unattractive shed.
Birds Love Them
Roses are favorites of butterflies and birds. The sweet, fragrant scent of the buds attracts entire flocks of feathered friends: the morning chorus makes your garden the perfect place for rest.

They Are Planted in Spring and Autumn
Clump roses can be planted twice a year — in autumn or spring. If you need fast results, plant roses in autumn: they will be more resistant to adverse weather and start growing faster than spring seedlings.

They Don’t Like Water
Clump roses don’t tolerate excess moisture in the soil — frequent watering is not recommended. In dry weather, young plants are watered every other day, and mature ones every 10–12 days.

Yeast Speeds Up Growth
You can accelerate the growth of stems and increase the number of buds on clump roses using yeast: dissolve 100 grams of fresh yeast in 10 liters of water. Water once a month, and the results won’t keep you waiting long.

Lilac
Summer cozy evenings, bird songs, and heavy lilac bunches blooming in the garden — a familiar scene for everyone. The fresh honey-like scent it gives off is unmistakably childhood!
Not All Lilacs Smell
The thick sweet scent of blooming lilac is impossible to confuse with anything else; it tells us that summer has arrived. However, Hungarian lilac breaks all stereotypes — unfortunately, it doesn’t smell at all.
Lilac Oil Is More Expensive Than Gold
Extracting lilac oil is a very labor-intensive process. That’s why essential lilac oil costs more than gold: the price per kilogram can reach up to $100,000.
Causes Headaches
Even if you love the scent of lilac, enjoying it for a long time is dangerous. These flowers contain toxic substances that can cause headaches.
Lilacs Shouldn’t Be Broken
It’s a misconception that lilacs must be broken. You can only cut the branches with a secateur — straight across to avoid injuring the branches too much. Even if you cut a lilac branch, it won’t last long and will quickly wilt — better to enjoy it in the park.

Peonies
Almost everyone in the garden has grown or still grows fluffy large flowers in pinkish, reddish, or white shades. Today, peonies are very popular: they're widely used in wedding design and interior decoration. It’s no wonder — it’s hard to overstate the beauty of these flowers.
Can Be Huge
Peonies are not small flowers, but some of their varieties can reach up to 25 centimeters in diameter! Hard to believe.

Live Up to 100 Years
If you plant a peony bush in your garden, there’s a good chance it will live until your grandchildren are born. Peonies are known for being long-lived among flowers.

Have Hundreds of Varieties
We’re used to pink and raspberry colors, but these flowers come in all shades — except blue. We’re ready to accept this loss, what about you?

Love Potassium
They don’t just love it — these flowers adore potassium. It helps them resist diseases and is essential for strong stems.
