We explain how to turn a small apartment without partitions into a mini-loft, based on designers' projects

More and more owners of small apartments choose the loft style for decoration. Why not? It's convenient: functional layout for living, simple finishing, and only necessary furniture and decor items. Want to do a stylish renovation yourself? Take inspiration from the pros.

Go for open storage systems

First of all, it's convenient — everything is within reach and you don't need to constantly open cabinet doors. Second, you can save a good amount of money by choosing shelves and open racks instead of classic wardrobes.

Zone the space with a bar counter

A bar counter can help divide the room into living and working zones, and it's easy to outfit it with cabinets to turn it into a kitchen island. Extra working surface is always useful.

Or use ceiling color

Want to zone the space without extra constructions? Take a roll and contrasting paint — and start painting the ceiling. For example, in the bedroom area, as designers Julia Shmidt and Alexandra Taranova did in their project. The feeling of a cozy nest is guaranteed.

Hide the sleeping area behind a glass partition

When you don't want to sacrifice natural light in the bedroom, a transparent partition with glass comes to the rescue. For moments when you want some privacy, hang a heavy curtain.

Or, conversely, don't hide it

Let's be honest — any partition still takes up space. So you can do without it, especially if you don't often have guests.

Use brick. A lot of brick

No loft interior is complete without rough surfaces — such as brick masonry or aged concrete. If you only have smooth plastered walls in a new building, don't give up — use decorative gypsum brick or clinker.

Don't fear black color

To make a studio in loft style more rugged, black furniture, textiles and decor help. They blend perfectly with red brick masonry and natural wood flooring. Bright colors are still needed — use them selectively.

What about exposed wiring?

Leave visible all that is usually hidden: ventilation pipes, heating ducts, and electrical wires. Place them anywhere and in any pattern — it's convenient if you don't want to do a full renovation.

Install a sliding door

A roll-up barn door is what you need if you want to add industrial elements to your interior. Usually, there's just one door between rooms in a studio — the bathroom. Replace that one.

Add rough furniture

All kinds of things work in a loft interior: old logs, rough chairs and tables made from solid wood. They look massive and very stylish.
