10 Major Mistakes in Interior Design That You Should Avoid

Each of us strives to make our home as cozy, stylish, and modern as possible. To achieve the desired result, we are willing to spend considerable money and put in a lot of effort. Unfortunately, this does not always guarantee success in such a challenging task as decorating and arranging the home on your own. To avoid the most common mistakes in interior decoration, use our simple tips.

Mistake #1: Overabundance of Accessories

A blank wall does not have to be filled with anything. When there are too many pictures, the room starts to resemble a storage closet. To avoid overdoing it, follow the same principle as when choosing jewelry — too many accessories look ridiculous and tasteless. Therefore, carefully choose a place for each decoration in your interior. Also, try using accessories made of different materials to give the room a more interesting and diverse appearance.

Mistake #2: Hanging Pictures Too High on the Wall

All pictures in the house should be placed at eye level so that anyone can fully appreciate your choice. Pictures should also hang proportionally to the walls and large furniture pieces, such as wardrobes or bookshelves. Do not buy pictures that are either too large or too small — they distract attention from the room's decor.

Mistake #3: Artificial Plants in the Interior

Artificial plants look at least ridiculous: unlike live flowers, they do not create a cozy atmosphere or convey a sense of harmony with nature. If you don't have time or desire to care for live plants, it's better to choose another decoration for the space and forget about artificial flowers.

Mistake #4: Excessive Enthusiasm in Decoration

Artificial decoration is a job for professionals. Qualified designers have access to quality materials and tools, and they possess experience and special knowledge. Therefore, we recommend seeking help from designers. But if such assistance is not within your budget, you can try doing the simplest touch-up, like decorating curtains or updating photo frames.

Mistake #5: Diversity of Design Ideas

Of course, you might like your neighbor’s kitchen design, the chandelier you saw in a glossy magazine, or the fabric bought by your sister on sale, but that doesn’t mean all these ideas must come together in your interior. Combining very different and especially unusual ideas can lead to disharmony. To avoid this, set priorities correctly and remember that everything should blend together.

Mistake #6: Too Many Rugs

Use rugs purposefully, emphasizing the dining area or highlighting the bed. Do not buy small rugs, otherwise you will visually divide the room into unequal parts.

Mistake #7: Bold Mix of Various Patterns

You should be extremely cautious when choosing patterns. Only one bold pattern should be present in the interior, which contrasts with other subdued and not overly bright ones.

Mistake #8: Mounting Curtain Rods Directly Above Windows

To visually elongate the room space, hang the curtain rod as high as possible on the ceiling. Also, drape the curtains properly — the fabric should flow elegantly along the walls and gently touch the floor.

Mistake #9: Too Many Colors

It is not necessary to choose a different color for each room — a common color palette will create a harmonious interior scene. If this seems dull to you, try playing with soft tones and wall textures.

Mistake #10: Incorrect Space Organization

It is very important to have a clear understanding of the space in your home. This will help you choose suitable furniture — comfortable and not taking up too much room. Draw a layout of your home and try to visualize where and how to best place the furniture. Also, ensure proper lighting — a lamp by the mirror will significantly expand the space, whereas a dimly lit room will appear smaller.
