Balcony of the Week: Mini-Office in a Glassed-In Balcony
As is commonly believed, the balcony is usually the most cluttered area of an apartment and is often used as a storage space. However, with some effort, it's possible to set up a small office, which is particularly relevant for small apartments where there is no room to dedicate a separate area for a workspace.
Based on the project of designer Alexandra Klyamuris, we will now explore how to design a functional workspace on a balcony.
Alexandra Klyamuris is a designer and head of her own interior design studio, with over 10 years of professional experience in designing private interiors.
As an interior designer, using her professional skills and knowledge, spatial thinking, sense of composition and color, and an unobstructed view, she can create a unique design project that reflects the personal qualities of the client.
Client's Request
In this project, the balcony with an area of 3 square meters is conveniently located next to the kitchen-living room, and the client requested that their office on the balcony be isolated and not visible from the living room.

To set up an office on the balcony, the designer decided to remove the window unit and the windowsill space, and relocate the radiator to the left wall. Additionally, the balcony was insulated on the floor, ceiling, and walls, with electric underfloor heating installed and the glass unit replaced.
The walls were painted in a light color, 3D panels were installed in the computer area, and the same tiles as on the kitchen floor were laid on the floor. For lighting, the designer used recessed lights for overhead illumination and a wall-mounted lamp to the left of the computer.

The designer achieved functionality through furniture: a computer desk with a comfortable work surface and side table, a spacious cabinet opposite, and a white office chair on wheels with a high back. Overall, the office is decorated in a modern style and fits in with the overall design of the apartment.

Tips for Readers
Always plan for insulation and adjustable electric heated flooring.
Glazing takes up a significant area on the balcony, so it should be warm and modern. Choose plastic windows with double glazing units. Don't forget about waterproofing.
Plan the functionality of the balcony and avoid cluttering the space.
If there is enough room on the balcony to place a cabinet and a computer desk, choose highly functional furniture. By the way, a regular chair or an ergonomic rotating chair takes up almost the same amount of space.
Plan the lighting. One of the main advantages of setting up an office in a balcony is natural lighting, but if the balcony faces the sunny side, use horizontal blinds to protect from the sun in summer. In addition to natural light, an ideal lighting solution for an office is even diffused light and wall-mounted sconces.
Don't forget to add interesting accents. The office reflects the personality of its owner, so interior elements should correspond to your character and individuality.
For decoration, use indoor plants, figurines, bookshelves, favorite photos in vibrant frames, or posters with inspiring slogans.
