Cultural Journey in Hebei

Located in Zhangjiajie, Hebei Province, the Zhangjiajie Library is part of a broader cultural cluster that also includes a city archive, museum, and planning museum. Together they form an integrated cultural center located in the central canyon area and reflecting the unique geography of the city — surrounded by mountains on three sides.

The library, the largest structure in the complex, covers an area of 22,000 square meters and houses a collection of 1.1 million volumes with 2,100 reading seats. Such scale makes it both a local educational resource and a symbolic step towards the cultural renaissance of Zhangjiajie, especially considering the city's preparation for hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Design Philosophy — Minimalism with Meaning

TANZOSPACE approached the library design with the belief that “less doesn’t mean empty, but concentrated; more isn’t full, but appropriate”. By rejecting unnecessary embellishments and focusing on clarity, the project embodies an economic aesthetics, where space quality and atmosphere take precedence over decoration.

The facade is made of perforated panels from recycled materials, creating a modern interpretation of a miniature mountain landscape. This construction reflects the surrounding environment, provides shading and light regulation, softens the bright sun of Hebei, and creates a filtered interior atmosphere.

Interior Space

The library's interior is organized around a atrium with integrated ceiling curtains, where platforms and main staircases define functional zones. Visitors encounter a sequence of layers of light and shadow, achieved through cross-lit windows and precisely calculated openings.

Materials are limited:

Gray-white cement flooring creates a neutral background.
Exposed wooden textures add warmth and tactility.
Filtered natural lighting becomes an architectural element, bringing life to reading areas.

The project intentionally balances quiet contemplation with societal interaction, offering flexible spaces for both individual and communal purposes.

Modern Urban Library

The Zhangjiajie Library expands the role of libraries beyond book storage. It is seen as a civic 'living room' — a place where knowledge, social life, and cultural experiences intersect.

Main features:

Teen and children zones with audiovisual areas, movie theaters, and reading caves.
Multi-purpose hall in the atrium, which can be used as a theater or lecture hall.
Grid modular system, connecting book collections and public interactions.
Flexible spaces, which can transform into galleries, recording studios, or concert halls.

Sound absorption is carefully integrated with sound-absorbing grilles, ensuring comfortable acoustics even in large halls.

Connection Inside and Outside

The external platform is covered with three-color terraced strips, continuing the logic of interior design into the urban environment. Vegetation, steps, and covered terraces add layers of greenery, strengthening the connection between architecture and nature.

The perforated facade also acts as an intermediary: although sunlight enters, reading areas are positioned closer to the center, creating a stroll-like ambiance, blurring the boundary between interior architectural forms and theatrical design.

Social and Cultural Value

As a public institution, the Zhangjiajie Library serves as both a repository of knowledge and a cultural catalyst. It unites:

Technology, with intelligent management systems, self-service kiosks, and LED information displays.
Community, encouraging intergenerational meetings through open plans and flexible programming.
History, with a private museum showcasing Zhangjiajie's role in the origins of Chinese civilization.

By combining books, performances, digital media, and exhibitions, the library becomes a multi-dimensional cultural space — “the lungs of the city,” nourishing its intellectual and social life.
