Importance of Solar Orientation in Architecture
Do you remember the cardinal directions from your childhood? It's time to recall these basics to understand how solar orientation can influence home architecture. Let's go!
Solar orientation is the path Earth takes around the Sun throughout the year.
This trajectory over 365 days creates four seasons (spring, summer, autumn and winter), as well as determines the length of days and nights. It's also important to remember that this orientation varies depending on the two hemispheres (northern and southern) and proximity to the equator.
How to Determine Solar Orientation of a Plot, House or Apartment?
PinterestIt's easy to determine the solar orientation of any property. One of the best methods is using a compass. With it, you identify the northern side and, accordingly, other cardinal directions. Today there are mobile apps with this feature that make everything faster and more convenient.
But if you don't have a compass, the tip is to visit the plot at different times of day. Visit two or three times to determine solar orientation. The first visit should be in the morning when the sun rises in the east. Observe the direction of the sun to identify the eastern side of your plot.
The opposite side is west. The side with the least light is south, and its opposite is north. Plan another visit during the day to see how sunlight behaves. Also remember that it's important to check this depending on season.
Thermal Comfort and Solar Orientation
To enjoy a warm and cozy home in winter and a cool atmosphere in summer, it's important to understand solar orientation relative to your property.
Each day the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. In winter, the sun's angle is more towards the north, whereas in summer it's slightly more towards the south, especially in the morning and evening.
Solar Orientation: Tips for Buying or Designing Real Estate
- During your first visit to a property, check for mold and moisture. This may indicate that the location receives little or no direct sunlight.
- Pay attention to nearby buildings, tall houses or trees. These can reduce direct sunlight exposure and even worsen ventilation.
- Open-plan layouts promote even distribution of natural light. If you notice such a configuration on the floor plan, it's a good sign.
- Avoid properties with living rooms and kitchens facing west. In addition to more intense heating, direct sunlight can affect appliance operation and fade flooring, furniture and soft furnishings.
- Apartments with balconies may shade lower floors even if they face north. Therefore, it's always useful to personally visit the property.
