Villa Vatnan by Nordic Office Architecture

Created and developed by Nordic Office Architecture, this beautiful villa realizes the simple architectural concept of the Vatnan family, after whom the project was named. The most challenging part of the project was the sloped site, which in turn provided an amazing view of the Norwegian nature.

Nordic Office Architecture was invited by the Vatnan family to bring their dream to life. They had a simple architectural concept, but a complex site where it needed to be implemented.

Located at the edge of an existing residential area with limited access and steep topography, the site still offers a stunning view from the private and sheltered southwest facade.

The family wanted a home for everyday life and parties, where the main rooms are on one floor with spacious dimensions and well-thought-out spatial relationships. Elevating this main floor one level above the natural entry level, we preserved the best view and sunlight. The elongated form of the house protects from wind and creates an open private outdoor area, while bedrooms and living room have direct access to the garden through a covered terrace that spans the entire length of the house.

The simple concept is strengthened by the overall simplicity of material use. The entire main floor is covered with pine timber, while the living room, kitchen and terrace are clad in oak plywood. Concrete is used throughout the house, and ceiling heights of 2.8 meters further enhance the feeling of spaciousness opening to the magnificent southwest view.

The basement and main terrace are made of concrete, while the gable and long walls on the northeast are clad in cedar wood.
