View Ridge Subdivision, Heliotrope Architects Project

The architectural studio Heliotrope Architects has completed the View Ridge subdivision project located in a beautiful setting in Seattle, Washington. The design of this 278 square meter home perfectly captures the natural atmosphere of its location with views of a lake on one side and a mountain on the other. Of course, it is here that the studio demonstrates its best qualities, as seen in the Lone Madrone Retreat project on Orcas Island which we have already published.

The main design challenge for this home was to preserve the expansive views of the lake and mountain provided by the site, considering possible future development that might obstruct the view.

The design solution places living areas on the upper floor, ensuring views are preserved forever, and includes a lift shaft to allow for aging in place. Formally, the three levels are offset rather than stacked neatly one on top of another. This strategy reduces the perceived scale of the house, provides a dramatic covered entrance and creates a rooftop terrace near the recreational and dining areas.

The garage and auxiliary spaces are located underground, with a second level entrance matching the ground level at the highest point of the site. The 4.5-meter elevation difference from the sidewalk to the front door is compensated by spacious steps broken up in the garden space and gates that mark the transition from public to private space. Significant existing trees and shrubs were used in the design, creating a rich entry experience and strong connection with nature both from the entrance and the upper floor.

A strong street presence and bold modernity of the house correspond to the neighborhood context, rich with examples of mid-century architecture.
