House with a Spiral Pearl | A3 Projects | Ipoh, Malaysia
Sculptural Family Home in the Heart of Meru Valley
Located in the picturesque golf resort of Meru Valley in Ipoh, the House with a Spiral Pearl by A3 Projects is an outstanding modern bungalow rising on a slope surrounded by wild tropical vegetation. The dwelling redefines family life through the subtle blend of geometry, light and landscape—where bold architectural forms meet tranquil nature.
Designed for multiple generations, the house combines accessibility, sustainability and expressive form, creating a timeless sanctuary that is simultaneously visually dynamic and environmentally responsible.
Composition of Volumes and Levels
The architecture of the House with a Spiral Pearl is defined by contrasting cubic volumes, each strategically offset to align with the natural slope of the site. The divided configuration ensures strong visual and spatial connection between each room and the surrounding valleys, while deep ground-level niches anchor the house into its topography.
From the street, the home appears elevated and sculptural, but within it, spaces unfold smoothly across multiple levels. The design balances openness with intimacy, featuring ramps and lifts that enable seamless movement for all generations.
Atrium: Light, Air and Movement
At the heart of the dwelling is a dramatic atrium—a well-lit space connecting all levels and serving as the societal and spiritual core of the family. This central volume is animated by a sculptural spiral staircase, an architectural detail that rises to a circular skylight hanging above the reflecting pond.
This striking composition creates a constantly shifting effect of light, shadow and reflection, where natural light changes the atmosphere throughout the day. Large inset windows, skylights and ventilation slots provide a constant flow of fresh air, while perforated aluminum screens maintain privacy from the outside world.
Private Courtyards and Personalized Spaces
Each private block in the house is designed to create a unique sensory experience. On the upper level, individual courtyards bring nature into bedrooms, providing fresh air and ample light.
The main block, intended for the homeowners, includes a garden terrace with vertical greenery and ribbed glass partitions that softly diffuse light into the bathroom. Across the atrium, a bridge leads to the family wing, where the owners' and their daughter's bedrooms are complemented by a music room, clad in warm wood to enhance acoustics and comfort.
The residence culminates with a rooftop garden, a cozy green retreat that encompasses panoramic views of the surrounding valley—perfect for quiet contemplation or family gatherings.
Simplicity of Materials and Sustainable Strategies
The material selection emphasizes the tactile elegance and environmental awareness of the house. Site-poured terrace tiles reinforce spatial continuity, reflecting natural light and providing smooth surfaces throughout the interior areas.
Sustainability is embedded in the project's DNA. The house features a rainwater harvesting system and photovoltaic panels, reducing dependence on external resources and aligning with the architects' vision of responsible, low-carbon design.
A House Breathing with the Landscape
The House with a Spiral Pearl is more than a family home. It's a living sculpture, harmonizing architecture and the surrounding environment. Through the combination of geometry, light and natural ventilation, A3 Projects have created a space that fosters unity, mindfulness and deep connection with nature.
The result is an elegant synthesis of form and function, where every curve, courtyard and beam of sunlight tells a story of balance and beauty.
