In the quiet district of Taquari in Brazil, Taquari House by Estúdio Empena stands as a serene architectural composition rooted in light, landscape, and lyricism. Located adjacent to the urban grid of Planalto Pilot, this 5112-square-foot home reflects a delicate balance between nature, poetry, and contemporary spatial design.

A Home Created as a Sensory Poem

Constructed using an approach that plays with light and shadow, the house seeks to blur the boundaries between built form and its environment. Taquari House elevates the standard of modern Brazilian residential architecture by incorporating elements of open-air living, soft transitions, and biophilic design strategies.

Green Integration and Landscape Connection

Two internal courtyards define the design—one surrounding a sculptural staircase and another near the kitchen—bringing light and vegetation to the heart of the house. Three strategically placed trees, including the native ipê, serve as focal points. The ipê blooms at different times of the year, enhancing the lyrical quality of the facade. A reflecting pool sits near the entrance, mirroring natural elements and adding meditative depth to the landscape approach. Explore more Brazilian architecture

Smooth Transitions In and Out

The architecture facilitates a continuous spatial flow while maintaining zones of privacy. This thoughtful organization includes: Lower Level: Open living areas, kitchen, and adjacent courtyards promote social interaction with seamless transitions to outdoor relaxation zones. Upper Level: Bedrooms face panoramic views of Brazil, offering moments of solitude and reflection. Garage Access: Located discreetly on a secondary street, it preserves the cleanliness of the main facade. The raised entrance platform serves as a meditative buffer between the bustling city and private sanctuary, guiding residents and guests through an organized architectural sequence.

Structural Clarity and Economical Design

Estúdio Empena employed refined structural language to achieve both aesthetic and economical solutions: Concrete with reduced spans ensures cost-effective construction without sacrificing elegance. A light impression is achieved through raised foundations that gracefully lift the volume above the site. The entrance roof, formed by an inverted beam and sloped slab, defines the threshold with expressive minimalism. This disciplined approach results in a home that feels both grounded and gracefully elevated.

Sustainability Through Site and Passive Design

The house integrates sustainable principles in both material use and efficiency: Local vegetation fills the courtyards and gardens, reducing water consumption and aligning with local ecosystems. Cross-ventilation minimizes reliance on mechanical cooling. A earth-toned palette—textured concrete, wood, and neutral finishes—creates a tactile connection to the place.

A Quiet Sanctuary Rooted in Brazilian Identity

Taquari House is more than just a home; it's a meditative experience. Every design gesture, from the blooming ipê to the ripples on the reflecting pool, celebrates the connection between architecture and nature at the heart of Brazil. This project continues Estúdio Empena's tradition of thoughtful, regionally inspired design that blends poetry with practicality.
