House Tahan by Blankpage Architects: Floating Stone Garden Over Junayd Bay
House Tahan by Blankpage Architects reinterprets the relationship between architecture and landscape in Kfor, Lebanon. This modern 9310 square foot home offers breathtaking views of Junayd Bay, with every architectural element carefully designed to enhance and highlight this spectacular scenery.
Architecture Rooted in Landscape
Blankpage Architects created this house as a visual extension of the mountainous context. Inspired by the harsh Lebanese landscapes, the house presents a floating prismatic stone volume placed on a transparent base. The building appears to grow organically from the slope, reflecting geological layers of the site and offering continuous sea views.
Dialogue Between Hardness and Lightness
A key feature of the house is its horizontal volume covered with sliding stone panels. These textured surfaces resemble the rocky terrain and also serve as dynamic screens for sunlight, filtering it into private zones. The mass sits on a transparent glass box formed by terraced platforms that adapt to the site's topography.
This lower level transitions from a stepped street-level path into an entrance area, connecting landscape and architecture. The result is an interaction between mass and levitation, opacity and transparency, based on contextual sensitivity.
Modern Interpretation of Lebanese Architectural Tradition
A lightweight steel arch with terracotta louvers is placed on the roof, sheltering a drawing studio surrounded by a spacious terrace. This element subtly references regional architectural style, especially the red-tiled roofs of traditional Lebanese homes.
The final form — a massive stone box over glass, clad in red mesh — offers a bold reimagining of the Lebanese rural house. Retaining important cultural elements, the design radically opens up the structure to its environment, emphasizing light, air and landscape.
A Visual and Experiential Masterpiece
With photographs by Ieva Saudargaitė, House Tahan is more than just a residence; it's a sculptural object in the landscape, an experiential sanctuary harmonizing mass and void, tradition and modernity. Through thoughtfully chosen materials and an architectural language rooted in place, Blankpage Architects have created a residence that is both bolder and calm, innovative and sustainable.
