What can be placed in the niche of a one-room apartment? Based on its size and the location of the house's utilities, you can organize: a wardrobe; a relaxation area; sleeping space; a home office; a children's room, and even a kitchen.

What Can Be Placed in the Niche of a One-Room Apartment?

Based on its size and the location of the house's utilities, you can organize:

  • a wardrobe;
  • a relaxation area;
  • sleeping space;
  • a home office;
  • a children's room
  • and even a kitchen.

One of the optimal solutions for organizing space in a one-room apartment is a passage from the entrance to living space, not through an intermediate area. When planning the interior, consider this.

If you don’t have niches in your apartment but they would help you define a specific zone, you can make such a structure yourself using gypsum board or other lightweight materials. For more complex work, it's better to consult with builders.

Wardrobe in the Niche

There are rarely any questions about organizing a wardrobe in a niche. The only addition: sliding doors are more practical than swing doors, and curtains instead of doors are actually less useful (they collect more dust).

When organizing a wardrobe in a niche, try to use all available space both in width and height of the niche so that you don’t later need additional storage for clothes and other items.

Relaxation Area in the Niche

A relaxation area can mean a small armchair surrounded by bookshelves or a guest sofa and a small coffee table with good lighting. When organizing a relaxation area in the niche, you can deviate from the overall style of the room by using a different color or pattern on the wallpaper to highlight the purpose of this zone.

Bedroom in the Niche

Organizing a bedroom is probably one of the most practical and suitable uses for a niche. In a one-room apartment, a niche with a bed allows you to do without a sofa bed and provides space for a full-size double bed, without cluttering the interior of the one-room apartment.

Comfort, by the way, can also be added by a small projection of the niche from the wall: for example, a niche with a partition near the headboard will give you more peace of mind before sleeping.

Workplace

For schoolchildren or home workers, it’s important that even in a one-room apartment there is a place for doing homework. A small niche can serve this purpose: a shallow desk (often computer-based), an extendable chair, and shelves above the workspace with good lighting will allow you to work without distraction.

In terms of setting up a workspace or a relaxation area, instead of a niche, you can also use other spaces in a one-room apartment: for example, in a studio with a balcony (or loggia), you can insulate the external walls and floor, remove the window opening, and install several shelves instead.
