How to Prevent Roof Damage During a Storm
When a storm hits, you can do little to protect your roof's integrity except hope that the storm doesn't hit your area directly and that your roof can withstand any impact. That's why Big Al's Roofing recommends not leaving the integrity of your roof to chance and taking preventive measures so it can survive a severe storm with minimal damage. Here are some steps you can take.

Regularly Inspect Your Roof
If you are familiar with how your roof looks in dry and sturdy weather, it will be easier for you to identify when something seems off. You might notice signs of damage caused by age or weather conditions, such as missing shingles, cracked tiles, or dark spots that may indicate the presence of algae or mold. Address these issues before a storm arrives to ensure your roof is strong enough to withstand any consequences.
Keep Downspouts Clean
Clean downspouts are an important part of your roof system. When they become clogged and remain that way, water can start to accumulate on the roof, causing structural damage and leaks. Clean them at least twice a year, more often if you live in an area with many large trees that can drop lots of leaves onto your roof. Call your roofer to clean the downspouts and let you know if any other parts of the roof need attention.
Trim Trees
Nothing can cause more subtle roof damage than a tree branch that regularly scrapes against roofing shingles. They can strip away the granules covering your shingles, cracking and damaging them. Additionally, when a storm comes, an untrimmed tree that is too close to the house can cause roof damage or even a complete tree fall onto the home due to wind force. If you are just planting trees, make sure to leave enough space between them and your house. If trees already exist, you can either remove them or trim them for the safety of your roof during storms.
Consider Impact-Resistant Roofing Materials
If you are installing a new roof and live in an area where storms occur frequently, consider purchasing impact-resistant roofing materials. They are specifically designed to resist strong winds, heavy rain, and other severe weather conditions. You can find impact-resistant shingles, tiles, or metal roofs that will give you peace of mind knowing your home and its occupants are protected during any storm. A good roofer should help you choose suitable materials that are storm-resistant.
