How to Perfectly Decorate an Industrial Loft
In the 1960s, industrial loft in New York was synonymous with an artist's shack that had no money for rent. Nowadays, it is the opposite: this new way of life has become popular, gained status and became fashionable.
Stay with us to learn more about industrial loft.
What Are the Features of a Loft?
A loft is a type of modern home that follows most concepts of contemporary architecture. Initially, lofts were aesthetically industrial because they originated from abandoned warehouses.
However, over time lofts have acquired other styles. Therefore, it is not uncommon to encounter spaces of this type with different decorative styles, including even classic. But regardless of style, a loft is always spacious, open and fully integrated. This type of home has no walls, and all rooms are connected to each other.
Large windows and doors are another defining feature of this type of space. In some types of loft, a small mezzanine area is also often found where a bed is usually placed.
When it comes to the original industrial loft, other features can also be highlighted:
- exposed brick walls;
- areas with unfinished appearance;
- visible pipes and installations;
- predominance of neutral and subdued tones;
- use of raw materials, especially wood and iron;
- large furniture elements;
- tall or double ceilings;
- vintage items.
Decorating an Industrial Loft
PinterestReady to get your hands dirty and create an interior for an industrial loft? Here are the following tips:
Color Palette
An industrial style loft is decorated with neutral tones, especially whites, blacks, grays and browns. Green accents are also welcome. These colors ultimately come through the materials used in decoration.
It should be remembered that when lofts first appeared, their residents had no resources to create a new interior, so they used items already present in the space. Therefore, compose your color palette based on materials that will be used in your interior design. But there is another tip: for a minimalist industrial loft, explore shades of white and black. For a loft with brutalist aesthetics, a gray and brown palette would work well.
Most Used Materials
Wood, iron, stainless steel, leather, concrete and brick are the foundation of decoration in industrial style loft. And here, the more rustic and rough the materials are, the better. For example, wood can be used from floor to furniture. However, one must be careful with excess as wood, especially dark shades, can make the space visually heavy.
Iron is an ideal raw material for furniture, plumbing, lighting, doors and windows. Stainless steel follows the same application principle as iron but in industrial design prefers brushed surface. Brick is perfect for wall cladding. You can choose to create new cladding or remove an old wall and reveal original brick, if possible.
Another standout element of industrial loft is exposed concrete. It can be in the form of beams, columns and decorative details. Also consider calculating for fired cement walls or floors, as well as countertops made from this material. Finally, choose leather. Synthetic is more resistant to environmental conditions and has the same texture and appearance as real leather. The material can be used in different colors depending on the aesthetic you want to create, to cover sofas, armchairs and chairs, as well as applied as decorative elements.
Matt Finishes
Always choose materials with a matte finish, without shine or silk effect. This applies to wood, iron and even stainless steel. For example, instead of a glossy varnish for wood, it is better to use resin or matte lacquer. For painting iron doors and windows, matte paints are also preferred.
The same applies to glaze for floors and walls.
Plants
Plants add liveliness and color to an industrial loft. This type of home with natural lighting can become a home for decorative species such as Ficus Lirata, Palm Leaf, Zamiokulkas and others. A good tip is to choose plants with intensely green leaves that add even more character to the space.
Vintage Items
Now antique markets and your grandmother's house will become your decorating store. Take antiques from these places to add style to an industrial loft. A little is enough: furniture, lamps and random decorative items.
