Rural Hotel in Portugal
The architectural studio José Lobo Almeida — Arquitecto renovated an old farmhouse in a rural area of Portugal, transforming it into comfortable vacation accommodation for tourists. The complex of stone structures dating back to the last quarter of the 19th century included several auxiliary buildings in addition to the main structure. Some of these, including the caretaker's house and stable, were demolished to make room for a new residential block.
In some interior areas, the architects left exposed grey stone masonry, contrasting it with white walls and smooth pine flooring used throughout both the old and new parts of the farmhouse.
The first floor of the main building is occupied by a common living room, kitchen, and reception zone, which replaced the former wine cellar and pigsty located here.
A wide spiral staircase with steps made from the same pine as the flooring connects the two floors of the main building.
The attic space was also removed to create three double-height bedrooms and an additional living room. Each of these rooms has access to a balcony.
The grass-covered inner courtyard also features a swimming pool, which was placed where the former grape press once stood.
