Studio OOAK Architects presented the design of a modern residence on the island of Karpathos, Greece. The 200-square-meter house belongs to a French-Swedish couple from Paris, who after years of traveling to Greece for wind surfing finally found their dream destination on the windy island. The breathtaking plot with an open view of the Aegean Sea and wind surfers on the beach of Afytos immediately captivated them.
To fully enjoy the views and get closer to the sea, the building extends beyond the upper plateau and floats above the landscape. Internally, this creates an illusion that the house hovers over the sea, while externally it highlights the contrast between artificial and natural elements.
The owners dreamed of a place where they could fully experience the beauty of the surroundings and find shelter from strong winds in this beautiful yet rugged environment. For this purpose, architects arranged living spaces around an inner courtyard and incorporated various voids that blur the boundaries between interior and exterior. A large open terrace is planned on the lower plateau.
The building structure is made of monolithic reinforced concrete, contrasting with a soft and bright interior that clearly indicates regional traditional architecture combined with Scandinavian furniture and a wide palette of materials. Windows come in various sizes and are positioned to provide a unique sea and landscape view from every room.
