Woodhouse Hotel in Rural China
The architectural firm ZJJZ designed the Woodhouse Hotel in the small mountain village of Tuangze in Guangzhou Province, China. Developed as part of the government's policy to combat rural poverty through agricultural tourism, it features 10 simple wooden houses with a total area of 500 square meters. This small village had no traditional architecture but could boast stunning landscapes and ecologically clean agricultural lands, which became the greatest treasure of Tuangze. Therefore, the architects aimed to capture the beauty of nature through calm forms that harmonize with the surrounding environment.
Due to the complex terrain, all construction materials were manually transported up the mountain. Each house was built using a combined structural system incorporating an above-ground steel platform and wooden frame.
The design of the wooden houses focuses on harmony with the landscape and rural atmosphere, creating a contrast with existing buildings.
