Country House for Relaxation of New York Residents
Country House for Relaxation of New York Residents
The project bureau Bates Masi Architects presented the Hither Hills residence in Montauk, New York, USA. The 311 square meter villa is located on the coast and serves as a retreat where owners come on weekends to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
The close relationship between the house and nature was the main idea of the project, implemented on a site with small plots and steep topography. Architects had to work with a challenging piece of land without flat surfaces, so the building volumes are fitted into the hillside and distributed across six levels, connecting internal spaces with the landscape on each level. The terrace configuration rethinks the traditional arrangement of public and private zones. Architects elevated the main living spaces to the top, raising them above the rooflines of neighboring structures and offering ocean views through large glass walls, while also allowing more sunlight and fresh breeze into the home. A swimming pool is planned for the highest point of the site.
The material palette in the project has been carefully chosen to enhance interaction with nature and harmony with the landscape. Thoughtful design provides a sensory immersion into the surroundings on a challenging site, enriching the inner world of homeowners and their guests.
