Two-Story Loft in Beijing

The Sun-Loft project was presented by the studio Superimpose Architecture, transforming a dark apartment in Beijing, China, into a bright, cozy, and modern loft as part of a TV show. The two-story space of 85 square meters is decorated in white with dominant wooden elements and green accents. The design principles are based on natural lighting, openness, simplicity, sustainability, and a close connection to natural vegetation.

The first stage of the re-planning was orienting the spaces according to the sun. The bedroom was swapped with the living room, and a new staircase is located in the center of the apartment under a skylight. The black balustrade adds contrast and emphasizes the architectural importance of the staircase.

One hundred plants grow in niches placed throughout the apartment. They especially enhance previously closed and unused spaces, turning them into a study and a winter garden.

The owner insisted on a closed kitchen to prevent smells from entering the living room. Thus, the food preparation area can be fully separated by a sliding door while not obstructing the spaciousness of the living room and dining area. The kitchen countertop transitions into the dining table.

Major storage areas are designed under and around the staircase, as well as beneath the lower beams. The heater, gas meter, socket block, air conditioner, refrigerator, and oven are also built into the area around the staircase. The bathroom on the first floor is hidden behind a wardrobe wall, and the second level features a large bathroom with a washing machine and dryer.

Superimpose Architecture believes that the living environment shapes the well-being and lifestyle of its inhabitants. The Sun-Loft project is based on comfort and functionality, aligning daily rituals with the movement of the sun.
