Rural House in New York State
This private home project, presented by Tsao & McKown, was realized in the town of Pound Ridge, United States. The plot covers 121,000 square meters, and the total area of the house is 84 square meters.
Variations in proportions and lighting create subtle rhythmic effects. Wooden grids draw attention and cast patterns of light and shadow, partially obscuring some windows for privacy. Two bronze fireplaces extend their flues from the ceiling in the center of the living and bedroom areas, maintaining comfort and warmth around the hearth on gloomy days.
The building features natural ventilation and lighting. In addition to glass sliding doors and windows, the structure incorporates compact floor-to-ceiling panels for adjusting airflow. A geothermal heating and cooling system contributes to excellent energy efficiency despite the open design and large windows.
Two large asymmetrical skylights are installed to optimize solar exposure throughout the seasons. Furthermore, low-energy materials were used in construction, primarily local timber framing.
Landscaping features native plant species, except for one bonsai tree purchased from a nearby nursery.
All rooms are thoughtfully arranged on a single floor, as requested by the clients in their third age. There is no need to climb stairs to enter the home: a low, sloped ramp ensures maximum convenience for residents.
